While Node.js is great for I/O bound tasks, Java offers vastly superior performance for CPU-intensive operations. Furthermore, Java's strict static typing, mature threading model, and incredibly robust ecosystem (Spring Boot) make it far more suitable for complex, mission-critical enterprise architectures (like banking or logistics) that require absolute stability and long-term maintainability.

Historically, Java mapped threads 1:1 with heavy OS threads, meaning handling thousands of concurrent connections required massive amounts of RAM. Project Loom introduced 'Virtual Threads'—lightweight threads managed entirely by the JVM. This allows modern Java applications to handle millions of concurrent connections on a single server, neutralizing one of the biggest historic advantages of Node.js and Go.

Traditional Java requires a JVM to run, leading to slower startup times and higher baseline memory usage—which is expensive in serverless or Kubernetes environments. GraalVM allows us to compile Java code Ahead-Of-Time (AOT) into a standalone native executable. This results in microservices that start in milliseconds and use a fraction of the RAM, drastically cutting cloud infrastructure costs.

We use the 'Strangler Fig' pattern. Instead of a risky 'big bang' rewrite, we place an API gateway in front of the legacy Java 8 monolith. We then incrementally extract specific business domains (e.g., 'Billing' or 'Inventory') into new, independent Spring Boot microservices running Java 21, slowly shrinking the monolith until it can be safely retired.

The N+1 problem occurs when an ORM (like Hibernate) executes one query to retrieve a list of parent entities, and then N additional queries to fetch their children, instantly crashing database performance. Our engineers actively prevent this by utilizing Entity Graphs, `JOIN FETCH` clauses in JPQL, and rigorous integration testing via Testcontainers to catch excessive queries before they reach production.

Spring Boot is the undisputed industry standard—massive ecosystem, highly reliable, and heavily used in enterprises. However, Quarkus and Micronaut are newer, cloud-native frameworks specifically designed from day one to compile natively via GraalVM for Kubernetes and Serverless environments, offering significantly lower memory usage and faster boot times than traditional Spring.

In high-frequency trading or low-latency APIs, traditional Garbage Collection (GC) pauses are unacceptable. We actively tune the JVM arguments and migrate workloads to modern, concurrent garbage collectors like ZGC (Z Garbage Collector) or Shenandoah. These collectors do the heavy lifting concurrently with application threads, guaranteeing pause times under 1 millisecond regardless of heap size.

When dozens of microservices communicate synchronously via REST, a failure in one service cascades, bringing down the entire system. By introducing Kafka (an event streaming platform), we decouple the services. If the 'Email Service' goes down, the 'Order Service' simply publishes the event to Kafka and moves on. When the Email Service recovers, it resumes processing the queue, guaranteeing zero data loss.
