Node.js operates on a single-threaded, non-blocking I/O model powered by the Event Loop (libuv). When Node receives a database query or network request, it offloads that task and immediately handles the next user. When the database responds, the Event Loop picks the callback up. This allows a single Node.js instance to handle massive amounts of concurrent traffic without consuming the massive RAM required by traditional threaded languages like Java.
Express is the legacy standard—simple but aging. Fastify is a hyper-optimized, modern framework that can handle up to 3x more requests per second than Express. NestJS is an enterprise architectural framework (built on top of Express or Fastify) that forces strict Dependency Injection and SOLID principles. We strongly recommend NestJS for massive enterprise teams, and Fastify for raw, high-throughput microservices.
If you run heavy cryptography, video processing, or massive data parsing on the main thread, the Event Loop gets blocked, and the entire server freezes. We solve this by offloading computationally heavy tasks to 'Worker Threads' (or entirely separate queue-based microservices), leaving the main thread perfectly responsive to handle incoming web traffic.
Vanilla JavaScript allows silent, catastrophic runtime errors (like 'undefined is not a function') to slip into production. TypeScript enforces strict types at compile time. In a massive backend codebase where hundreds of developers are working simultaneously, TypeScript ensures that changing a database schema automatically throws errors anywhere the related code needs updating, drastically improving stability.
We package the Node.js API (often utilizing a lightweight framework or native routing) and deploy it to AWS Lambda. Instead of paying for a server that sits idle 24/7, Lambda only executes (and charges you) when a request actually comes in. It provides infinite, instant auto-scaling to handle Black Friday traffic spikes without any DevOps intervention.
When a GraphQL query asks for a list of Users and their Posts, naive implementations will make 1 database query for the users, and then N queries for every single user's posts, crippling the database. We utilize the 'DataLoader' library in Node.js, which intercepts, batches, and caches these requests, turning 100 database queries into a single, highly optimized SQL statement.
Serverless functions (like AWS Lambda) spin up and down constantly. If every function opens a new database connection, you will quickly exhaust your database's connection pool, crashing the system. We resolve this by utilizing modern ORMs designed for serverless (like Prisma Accelerate) or deploying AWS RDS Proxy, which intelligently pools and multiplexes connections securely.
Memory leaks often occur from improperly closed database connections, runaway caching arrays, or lingering WebSocket event listeners. Our DBAs and backend engineers utilize tools like Chrome DevTools Memory Profiler and Datadog APM to take heap snapshots of the V8 engine in production, allowing us to instantly identify and eliminate the specific objects choking the Garbage Collector.
