However, by deploying PHP on modern asynchronous runtimes like Swoole, Laravel Octane, or FrankenPHP, the framework stays booted in memory permanently. This allows PHP to handle non-blocking asynchronous I/O and process thousands of requests per second, matching or beating Node.js in throughput.
PHP 8 introduced robust, strict type hinting. In a massive enterprise codebase, passing around mixed arrays or untyped variables leads to silent, catastrophic runtime crashes. We enforce `declare(strict_types=1);` and utilize PHPStan on the max setting, ensuring that your backend is as strictly validated and bug-resistant as a Java or C# application.
The N+1 problem occurs when an ORM (like Eloquent) makes 1 database query to fetch a list of users, and then N queries to fetch the posts for every single user, crippling the database. Our engineers proactively identify this by analyzing query logs, utilizing 'Eager Loading' (`with()`) to fetch all related data in exactly two highly optimized SQL queries.
Introduced in PHP 8, the JIT (Just-In-Time) compiler translates PHP bytecode directly into machine code at runtime. While it doesn't vastly change the speed of standard web requests (which are usually database-bottlenecked), it provides massive performance gains for CPU-intensive tasks like image processing, complex mathematical reporting, and machine learning scripts.
Web requests must respond in milliseconds. If a user uploads a video, we do not process it synchronously. Instead, our PHP backend instantly pushes a 'Job' to a Redis queue. A separate pool of background PHP worker processes (managed by tools like Laravel Horizon) picks up the job and processes the video asynchronously without making the user wait.
