JavaScript is dynamically typed, meaning errors (like trying to access a property that doesn't exist or is `undefined`) only crash the application at runtime when the user clicks a button. TypeScript catches these errors at compile time, literally underlining the broken code in the developer's IDE before it is ever committed, saving thousands of hours in QA and debugging.
Historically, the React frontend and Node.js backend were disconnected. If the backend changed a JSON response, the frontend wouldn't know until it crashed. tRPC allows the frontend to directly import the backend's TypeScript types. If the backend changes a field name, the frontend build instantly breaks, ensuring your APIs are always perfectly synchronized.
We use an incremental approach. We rename files from `.js` to `.ts` one at a time, utilizing `allowJs: true` in the `tsconfig.json`. This allows the application to compile perfectly while a mixture of old JavaScript and new, strictly typed TypeScript coexist. Over time, we progressively tighten the compiler rules until the entire codebase is 100% strictly typed.
TypeScript only exists during development; it compiles down to regular JavaScript and is erased before running in the browser. Therefore, if a third-party API sends you bad data (a string instead of a number), TypeScript cannot catch it. We use libraries like Zod to validate incoming data at runtime, ensuring the external JSON perfectly matches our expected TypeScript interfaces.
Generics allow developers to write highly reusable, flexible code without losing type safety. Instead of writing a specific function to fetch a `User` and a nearly identical function to fetch a `Product`, we write one Generic function that accepts a 'Type Variable' (`<T>`), allowing it to dynamically return perfectly typed data depending on what was requested.
In a traditional setup, sharing a TypeScript interface between a Backend API repo and a Frontend React repo requires publishing NPM packages (which is slow and tedious). A Monorepo (using Turborepo) puts both applications in the same git repository. They can instantly import shared types from a common `/packages/types` folder, speeding up development drastically.
Older ORMs (like TypeORM or Sequelize) rely heavily on decorators and often struggle to provide accurate types for complex SQL joins. Modern ORMs like Prisma and Drizzle generate flawless TypeScript definitions directly from your database schema, ensuring that your database queries are perfectly autocomplete-able and type-safe directly within your IDE.
As TypeScript codebases grow massively, the native `tsc` compiler can take minutes to build the project. We utilize modern, Rust-based compilers like SWC, or Go-based compilers like esbuild and Vite.
