RabbitMQ is a traditional message broker designed for task routing; once a consumer reads a message, it is deleted. Kafka is a distributed event streaming platform designed as an immutable commit log. Kafka stores events persistently for days or years, allowing multiple independent consumers to replay historical data at their own pace, making it vastly superior for big data pipelines and microservice event sourcing.

CDC is a technique used to track row-level changes (Inserts, Updates, Deletes) in a database in real-time. We use Debezium (running on Kafka Connect) to read the underlying transaction logs of databases like PostgreSQL or MySQL. It instantly streams these changes into Kafka topics without putting heavy query loads on your source database, effectively freeing your data from monolithic silos.

As your microservices evolve, the shape of your data (events) will change. We implement Confluent Schema Registry using strongly typed formats like Avro or Protobuf. This guarantees that producers cannot accidentally publish malformed data to a topic, and ensures strict backwards and forwards compatibility so that older consumers don't break when new fields are added.

Historically, Kafka relied on Apache Zookeeper to manage cluster metadata, which was notoriously complex to operate and scale. Kafka Raft (KRaft) is a modern consensus protocol built directly into Kafka itself. By removing the external Zookeeper dependency, KRaft drastically simplifies cluster architecture, allows Kafka to support millions of partitions, and drastically improves recovery times during broker failures.

Kafka Streams is a powerful Java library for building highly scalable stream processing applications natively within your microservices. ksqlDB is a purpose-built database optimized for stream processing that sits on top of Kafka Streams. It allows data engineers to write simple, familiar SQL queries to execute complex real-time transformations, aggregations, and joins on moving data.

No. Managing a raw Apache Kafka cluster requires highly specialized DevOps expertise regarding JVM tuning, disk I/O, and partition rebalancing. For most clients, we strongly recommend migrating to fully managed services like Confluent Cloud or AWS MSK (Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka) to drastically reduce operational overhead while ensuring 99.99% uptime.

Kafka is designed for absolute fault tolerance. We configure topics with a Replication Factor of at least 3, spreading replicas across different Availability Zones (AZs). We enforce `acks=all` on producers, ensuring a message is written to the leader and all followers before returning success. For multi-region Disaster Recovery, we implement MirrorMaker 2 to replicate topics asynchronously across the globe.

In distributed systems, network blips can cause a producer to retry sending a message, resulting in duplicates (At-Least-Once delivery). This is catastrophic in financial systems. We configure Kafka's Transactional API and idempotent producers to ensure Exactly-Once Semantics (EOS), guaranteeing that a message is processed and recorded exactly one time, regardless of network failures.
